This month’s recipe was chosen by Lisa of Smiley’s Sweets and Creations. Tres Leches just happens to be one of my favorite desserts. Growing up it was a dessert that we had relatively often. Here in Miami it is readily available in almost every grocery store and Latin restaurant and it just happens to me one of my grandmother’s specialties. I love it, so I was excited to try Martha’s version, but I was a little disappointed.
It’s not that the cupcakes weren’t good. I took them to a family event and they all got eaten, but we all agreed this recipe was not the best. Unfortunately my grandmother’s recipe is a secret even from me, so I don’t know how her recipe differs from Martha’s, but the texture was not quite right and it just felt like something was missing. I do really like the idea of Tres Leches Cupcakes. It is really different and fun. I would just use a different recipe next time.

Your cupcakes look grea. I liked mine much better on day 2.
i thought mine tasted a bit too eggy….yours look great though!
Yours look great, what is the texture supposed to be? A lot of people are mentioning that there’s were too soggy (which would gross me out), but I only used about 1/2 of the milk mixture and thought these were a great, moist cake. But maybe not so authentic….
It’s supposed to be moist, even a little wet, but not soggy. It should taste like a really moist cake not like a piece of cake that a glass of milk spilled on, lol.
I think you had the right idea using only 1/2 of the milk mixture. I used all of it and it seemed like too much to me. So maybe it was too much liquid or maybe as Julie pointed out they needed to sit overnight to absorb it all or something. My cupcakes were a little too wet for my taste, not that they were horrible or even not authentic, it just wasn’t the best.
I agree this cupcake did have a different texture. I did enjoy them and may try them again.
How neat that you have a “secret” recipe in the family – these sure look good! I’m looking forward to making them – even though I hear it’s not the “best” Tres Leche recipe out there!
Yes, my grandmother is a little crazy like that. All of her recipes are secret. It kind of drives me nuts because I want to know how to make them, but at the same time it’s cute so I can’t be mad at her.
I’m just hoping she tells me her secrets eventually, lol.
We enjoyed these after they sat for a while. I hope you can pry that secret recipe from your grandmother!
I am always saddened when I try to recreate a beloved recipe and can’t. I wish I was one of those people who could taste something and decide exactly what all the ingredients should be.
Hi I just wanted to leave a comment to say that I enjoy your blog. Looking at the number of comments, I see others feel the same way!
Congratulations on a very popular site
